Protecting yourself from Identity Theft
Today I received a call from a company that wants to help me protect my identity.
That got me to thinking, what can I do to protect myself,
- check my credit reports with the big three:
- shred any paperwork that has sensitive information
- make sure I get the mail from my mailbox in a timely fashion
- only mail bills from the post office or other secure mailbox
Also I can freeze my credit report so no one but me can authorize new credit.
The cost associated with each item listed above varies by state and credit agency. It may be a fair amount work for someone to do, but it seems feasible.

I received this message on one of the accounts that are listed on my website. So, obviously something isn't right about it to start with, I mean what company would send an email like this to the admin account listed on a web site. The email address the you are supposed to respond to, is a free email account....again what company would be using a free email account and not one that points to their own domain.

If you receive an email like this don't follow the links or forward it to anyone, just DELETE IT.

I received this message today, after a quick look I decided something wasn't right with it. First off the place you respond to is a free email provider, like a gmail or hotmail. So, obviously something isn't right about that, because a legitimate business would not be using a free email provider. The following is the break down of the major parts of the message I received.

lightblog local file inclusion vulnerability
I noticed some hits in my server log for this exploit ( "view_member.php?username=../../../../../../../../../../../../../etc/passwd%00" ). Looks like folks are looking for un-patched servers. So if you are using Lightblog, it is probably a good time to patch your install. I saw that versions 9.6 & 9.8 were affected by this exploit. So you might need to check out version 9.9.2.
